Chimpanzee Tracking
Mahale is home to one of Africa's largest populations of wild chimpanzees, offering an intimate and moving experience as you trek through the rainforest with expert guides to find them. The park's chimpanzee communities have been studied for decades, resulting in remarkable habituation that allows for incredible close encounters.
Unlike many wildlife viewing experiences, chimpanzee encounters in Mahale are unhurried and deeply personal. You may spend hours observing these intelligent primates as they feed, play, groom, and interact with each other. The experience of watching chimpanzees use tools, communicate through complex vocalizations, and display emotions so similar to our own is profoundly moving.
The M-group, Mahale's most studied chimpanzee community, numbers around 60 individuals and has provided invaluable insights into chimpanzee behavior and social dynamics. Tracking these remarkable animals through their forest home is the highlight of any visit to Mahale.

Best Time to Visit
The optimal time to visit Mahale Mountains National Park is during the dry season from June to October. During these months, trekking conditions are at their best with minimal rainfall, and chimpanzee sightings are most reliable as the apes tend to stay at lower elevations.
The dry season offers excellent hiking conditions with firm trails and good visibility in the forest. Chimpanzees are easier to track as they congregate around predictable food sources and water availability. The weather is generally pleasant with warm days and cool nights, perfect for both forest trekking and lake activities.
The wet season (November to May) transforms the park into an exceptionally lush, green landscape with flowing streams and vibrant vegetation. While chimpanzee tracking is still possible, heavy rains can make trails muddy and challenging. Some activities like mountain hiking may be more difficult during the peak rainy months.
