NORTHERN CIRCUIT ROUTE – 9 DAYS (LONGEST & HIGHEST SUCCESS RATE).

9 Days 8 Nights

The Northern Circuit is the ultimate Kilimanjaro experience, offering a full 360° circumnavigation of the mountain. This route is celebrated for its gradual ascent, allowing excellent acclimatization, and provides unmatched scenic diversity from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, volcanic ridges, and remote northern flanks. It is quieter than most routes, giving trekkers a sense of wilderness and solitude.

The journey begins at Londorossi Gate, where guides welcome you and brief you on safety and trekking tips. As you step into the lush rainforest, the air is fresh, and the scent of wet earth fills your senses. You follow a narrow, shaded trail winding through giant ferns, towering trees, and colorful orchids, while the sounds of tropical birds and monkeys echo through the canopy. The day ends at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp), a peaceful campsite surrounded by moss-covered trees, where you can enjoy a warm meal and prepare for the adventure ahead.

The trail steepens as you ascend out of the rainforest into the heath and moorland zone, marked by dramatic, open landscapes dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels. Views of Kilimanjaro’s western glaciers and the plateau ahead begin to emerge, giving a glimpse of the grandeur to come. After several hours of steady uphill trekking, you reach Shira 1 Camp, where the cool breeze and expansive views of the Shira Plateau offer a spectacular sunset. The night sky here is clear and full of stars a prelude to the high-altitude adventure.

Today’s route crosses the broad Shira Plateau, a wide, open expanse of volcanic soil and sparse vegetation. The trail is relatively gentle, allowing your body to acclimatize while offering panoramic vistas of Mount Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo shimmering in the distance. The camp at Shira 2 sits near a small ridge, providing spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s northern and western flanks. The air is crisp and dry, and you may spot alpine wildlife, such as Harris’s hawks or small rodents.

This day is all about climb-high, sleep-low acclimatization. You ascend to the Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation, which takes you through rugged, rocky terrain. From the tower, you enjoy sweeping views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. After reaching Lava Tower, you descend slightly to Moir Hut, nestled in a quieter part of the northern circuit. This gentle drop helps your body adjust to altitude while providing a quiet, remote campsite surrounded by arid, otherworldly landscapes.

Today you enter the northern flank, one of the most remote and pristine areas of Kilimanjaro. The trail traverse’s volcanic scree and arid slopes, with occasional clusters of giant lobelias punctuating the landscape. Wildlife sightings are more frequent here, including antelopes and mountain birds, thanks to the minimal human traffic. Buffalo Camp, your destination, is tucked in a quiet valley with views of the northern glaciers perfect for rest and reflection before higher altitudes.

The trek today is longer but moderate, taking you across sparse, moonlike terrain and remote wilderness with few hikers. The Third Cave Camp is perched on a ridge, offering dramatic perspectives of Mawenzi’s jagged spires and the summit of Kibo looming above. The landscape is increasingly alpine, with low shrubs and rocky ground dominating the horizon. The clear, crisp air and solitude make this day a favorite among those seeking serenity and spectacular photography opportunities.

This is a shorter but strategically important day. You hike through alpine desert terrain, preparing your body for the summit attempt. School Hut serves as the final staging point for your midnight push to Uhuru Peak. The camp is exposed and windy, surrounded by glacial ridges and volcanic rocks. Trekkers spend the afternoon resting and hydrating, while guides provide final summit briefings and equipment checks.

The summit day begins around midnight. You ascend under the cover of darkness, following headlamps along a steep, switchback trail across rocky scree and volcanic ash. The climb is physically demanding and extremely cold, but the reward is Sunrise at Stella Point and finally, Uhuru Peak the roof of Africa. After photos and celebration, you begin a long descent to Mweka Camp, passing through alpine desert, moorland, and finally the rainforest. This descent is both a relief and a chance to reflect on your journey.

The final day is a gentle, celebratory walk through the rainforest, with the sounds of birds and monkeys welcoming you back to lower altitudes. You reach Mweka Gate, where certificates of achievement are awarded and drivers await. This marks the successful completion of a full 360° Kilimanjaro circuit, leaving you with memories of diverse ecosystems, dramatic landscapes, and the ultimate trekking achievement.
